During my first year of grad school at Northern Arizona University, students were offered the opportunity to benefit from interdisciplinary collaboration in a quasi-professional, client-based environment. This project was a two-part collaboration among students in Conceptual Photography and the MFA in Creative Writing program circa 2019. Photographs were displayed in various galleries across Flagstaff—either at Cline Library, the Communications Building, the Liberal Arts Building, and/or Firecreek Coffee. The photography aimed at illustrating an idea and producing a strategic emotional response of the viewer. Location portaraiture—human subjects on location using natural light and lighting systems. MFA in Creative Writing students were asked to select two words that should guide the conceptual direction of the photoshoot. My two words were “silence” and “longevity,” and snow both quiets and digs its roots. Longevity, for the speakers in my poems, represents a desperation to be planted, to maintain some sense of stability and conviction. Despite sparse ocular similarities within my work, the relationships between my poems are informed by the absence of sound and the shape it leaves behind.
